We saw the Dwayne Jones HERCULES today, in 3D, and enjoyed it. I dont understand Alan Moores objections; Steve Moore, on whose graphic novel The Thracian War the movie is based, is prominently credited; he died not long ago and the movie is dedicated to him. I have to assume he or his estate was paid. So whats the story? I have felt for a long time now that moviemakers are under utterly no requirement to make a movie thats faithful to its source. The book/play/graphic novel is its own thing with its own requirements and goals; the movie is another. This one is well produced, has a good cast and tells a story that held my interest. I dont flippin care if it presents a Herc with no fantasy elements (though he does seem to be super-humanly strong). What I wanted was an entertaining movie and thats what I got. Johnson is perfectly okay as Hercules, and sure the hell looks the part. Director Brett Ratner--most often a producer these days--made one movie I liked, the atypical THE FAMILY MAN, and two I thought were okay--the first RUSH HOUR and RED DRAGON. I didnt care for his X MEN movie, though its passable thanks to the cast and effects. I havent seen many of his other movies. The tone of HERCULES is wonky--slightly spoofy while also serious--but it mostly fulfills its goals.
