We see what we want to see, the brain has a phenomenal ability of rationalizing/distorting the obvious to the point of making us oblivious to it. This is especially true when reality is discomforting or the task of making reality more comfortable becomes so arduous, that the task of making changes becomes relegated to our minds ability to numb us to what we ought to do, rather than engage us in the task to doing what we have to do. Think of it as the brains comfort trait, IE denial. Denial is not a river in Egypt.
