We spent some time with our friends over at the Trees Coalition - TopicsExpress

We spent some time with our friends over at the Trees Coalition this weekend to help them replace the Cherry Trees on S. Pine Street. The trees had to be removed recently due to aging and disease (and to a lesser extent semi-trucks). The effort was a success and 14 new trees were replaced in the process. The Tree Coalition plays a large role in assisting SPACE with property management: Specifically in consultation and education regarding the identification and removal of non-native and invasive species that threaten our native plant species. English Ivy, Wisteria, and Privet are some of the major non-native/invasive plant species in the area that compete against native species for sunlight, water, etc. They are extremely flexible in their ability to adapt to cold/warm, wet/dry, and light/dark environments. These non-native and invasive species, and many other plant/tree species, continue to be popular among local consumers. The vast majority of those consumers are probably unaware of the problems these species present. These species grow at constant speed and not only pose problems to properties that we own and/or manage, but they present a major concern throughout the Spartanburg local area as a whole. The Tree Coalition has done a remarkable job in converting areas overgrown with English Ivy, Privet, etc. into local parks or natural areas that are accessible to the public. The good people over at the Trees Coalition are always in need of volunteers who are willing to devote their time and energy towards enhancing the aesthetic quality of our local landscape. Newt Hardie is the President and Chairman of the non-profit organization and observing his commitment and tenacity towards giving back to the community is nothing short of inspirational. If you would like to volunteer in the future or gather more information, please feel free to contact Newt via email: newthardie@aol. Or visit their website here: treescoalition.org/about-us.html
