We started with ribbons and rainbows, fliers and bumper stickers, - TopicsExpress

We started with ribbons and rainbows, fliers and bumper stickers, celebrity endorsed albums, with hopes of stopping an epidemic, a disease, hunger and torture in 3rd world countries. With that said, I commend ever person who has taken the challenge and called out: others to do the same. BRAVO! BUT, ask yourself this, if youre old enough to remember the struggle for money in aids research, did you give then. When asked to give a donation for cancer research how deep did you dig in your pockets? A neighbor asked for a pledge to help in suicide prevention or heart disease, was your gut reaction to support her/his goal to raise x number of dollars? I learned a very LONG time ago, we never care about a cause until it happens to us. Or in this case, people can see us do our altruistic deed. Who are we kidding? The WHO/NIH have stated that research dollars are gained not by the severity of the disease, but its overall marketing and perceived mortality rate. Before you bombard me with hate mail, think! The disease was first discovered in 1869, brought to the attention of the world in 1939 by Lou Gehrig. At any time 30,000 people a year suffer from this disease. When you took the challenge, how much did you REALLY know about it? And THAT S where it gets interesting. Right now this is a viral challenge which began over a year ago, and like any fad, it too shall pass, the newness will wear away the money will stop and research dollars wont be flowing from ice buckets, but trickling once again from the federal tap. So as you nominate friends, coworkers, family, etc, remember this..... The person who opens the door for another expecting gratitude and accolades, doesnt understand the meaning of the gesture Give, but give because you want to, not because you need to show the world you can take a cold shower..
