We still joke about dads war stories. Back in 1994, the University of New Orleans asked my dad for his history of June 6th, 1994. A piece of this was excerpted in Stephen Ambroses book, D-Day June 6 1944: the Climatic Battle of World War II. Heres the full transcript of my dads submission as told in his words. Theres a scene in the Tom Hanks movie, Saving Private Ryan where Tom Hanks character crawls beneath a jeep, shivering following the horrors of that first day. My dad mentions doing that. Im sure he wasnt the only one.
