We thank the Cultural Alliance of Greater Hampton Roads for taking - TopicsExpress

We thank the Cultural Alliance of Greater Hampton Roads for taking a proactive step toward protecting the local arts and holding the local press accountable. Lets all hope that the Virginian Pilot keeps its word! Patricia Richardson, the newly hired publisher of the Virginian Pilot, responded to a letter that the Cultural Alliance sent expressing dismay about the laying off of the two highly esteemed art writers-Mal Vincent and Teresa Annas. The Alliance, representing the arts and cultural community, expressed our concern about the loss of these designated arts writers and wanted to know how the newspaper would be covering the myriad of arts and culture events in Hampton Roads. Our letter discussed the major economic impact of the arts in this area and how the patrons of the arts looked to the paper for arts overviews, critiques and between the scenes news stories about the arts. Ms. Richardson indicated that the Virginian Pilot is fully aware of the economic impact of the arts and the needs and desires of the arts community. As a paper, their goal is to continue to cover the arts fully. They plan to reassign writers to arts events and to use freelance writers to assure that the arts are covered. The Alliance thanks Ms. Richardson for her response to our letter and for her promise that the paper will continue their dedication to the coverage of the arts and culture community.
