We thought you might enjoy a little history about one of our favorite lines, Princess Cruises. Diana, Princess of Wales – Royal Princess® November 15, 1984 | Southampton, England When the original Royal Princess debuted she was a trend-setting ship. With all outside cabins and the first to feature an open atrium interior layout, she was a special ship, calling for a special godmother. As Princess Cruises was part of the venerable British company P&O, and with the name Royal Princess, who more perfect to name this special vessel than Diana, Princess of Wales. Arriving by train to the cruise terminal in Southampton, the Princess of Wales greeted company and government officials before moving to the specially-built podium from which she would say the words, “I name this ship Royal Princess. May God bless her and all who sail in her,” before pulling the lever that would send the traditional bottle of champagne against the ship’s hull, officially giving the ship its name. Escorted by the Captain, the Princess of Wales then toured the ship, and met many members of the ship’s company. During the exchange of gifts, she presented the Captain and crew with a beautiful ceremonial sword to commemorate the occasion.
