We took a sobering walk Saturday in Budapest with a college - TopicsExpress

We took a sobering walk Saturday in Budapest with a college professor who told us about Hungarys politics. A Putin-like leader views 1930s Fascism as the golden age. As a result, he is installing monuments to that era and removing others, such as a proposal to remove the sculptured bridge and statute of Nagy, a leader of the Soviet uprising, near Parliament (behind Ellen in photo). Hes also erected a Holocaust memorial that depicts Hungary as angels and uses Nazi imagery. That prompted the counter-protest of images of people exterminated and other relics placed in front of the statute. Protests occur daily. Nearby, on the Danube, are bronze shoes representing chained Jews who were shot in mass executions and dumped in the river. A church that is a seat of right-wing and anti-Semitic views has installed a bust of Horty, the leader who collaborated with Nazis and signed deportation orders. There WAS dinner -- at Borkonyha Wine Kitchen. Spectacular, beginning with the pan-fried duck liver -- crisp outside and melting inside -- with pea puree, greens and sour cherry preserves. (Also with a glass of Tokaj wine.) To say we also had cabbage soup, pork and cottage cheese polenta doesnt do justice to the Michelin-starrted cuisine. Wow.
