We took the all new Nikon D810, and put it to work in one of the most challenging on-site shooting environments for a video test: a dimly lit bar for a live concert. The white balance was set to Auto 1, with a Standard color profile. HD Video was recorded at 1080p @ 50fps, which we dropped down to 25fps for YouTube, an f.2.8 aperture and 1600 ISO. Additional equipment included a Panasonic 32GB SDHC U3 card, a Manfrotto 562B Video Monopod, and a Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 lens. All audio was recorded in camera for the purposes of this video, with levels manually set to their lowest possible sensitivity. About the Show: Body Butter is a collaborative outfit featuring Burt Sugar (of New Positions and Gay fame) and Mr. Bliss (of Strange Robotix) putting their love of 80’s soul, funk and electro in a blender, and transforming it into their own blend of modern pop. I’ve known both members for some time, and had been actively awaiting this show, which has been in the works for the last six months, and was made possible by the joint ventures of People Put Out Productions (PPOP), Eastern Promises, and The Handlebar. The set spanned only four songs, but the combination of Chris’ mellow electronic beats, and Neil’s explosive vocal talents (which sounded like they were channeling both Boy George and Robert Plant simultaneously), greeted the band’s debut show with thunderous applause at the relatively small 120 capacity venue. My big regret of the night was being unable to keep recording video, as about 40 seconds after this video ends, Neil exploded into a vocal solo so raucous that has me convinced we’ll be hearing a lot more from Body Butter in the near future.
