We used to do this regularly when teaching and practicing at Hyun H. Kims Korean Martial Art Academy back in the early 90s in Santa Clara; yet my nap bup was never smooth enough! Too bad for me - However, I somehow always enjoyed the fact that my falling techniques always seemed to work for me in a CHIROPRACTIC sense. The crackling and release of tension proved quite therapeutic. To this day, I still try to exercise my falling techniques for that reason! Not only that, they are so helpful in even non-combative situations. For example, (probably as a self-fulfilled prophecy) I would sometimes imagine myself tripping and falling (knowing my legs are bad), and one day I stumbled off the truck loading dock (rather high up) at the company warehouse where I was working in Silicon Valley - we all were rushing from our work sections or cubicles to go out to the roach coach (lunch truck) for break. The drop was almost my own height. I caught myself by bouncing and rolling sideways to break the fall, and almost noone saw it. People merely glanced back at me to see if something happened, but never fathomed that I just fell and popped back up in the blink of an eye. Like when I temporarily trained in Korea (in Cholwon during one of my last visits, and in PyungTaek a lot earlier) inside the practiced techniques were always vicious and abrupt - Basically NO MERCY! But, on the otherhand others apply theirs in a subtle and surprising manner - as if not to let the opponent know one is fighting back (until it is too late)! When Master Kong taught us applied self-defense techniques,it was always smooth clear, gentle, and controlled, Natural Force - if done correctly, the techniques would naturally work - as he would say, through practice, speed and power come naturally!
