We wake up every day as South Africans to confront our challenges. - TopicsExpress

We wake up every day as South Africans to confront our challenges. The women, with kids on their backs, flood the taxi ranks to cook and sell what they do. The men sweep the streets, they wash cars, and they occupy kasi corners to sell a bit of candy. We run up and down forcing our way through packed trains, selling a bit of this and a bit of that. In high pitched voices we marshal the taxis as we shepherd a flock of passengers headed to various destinations. We suspend our pride and go into the homes of the affluent and clean the mess they make. Much of what we do isn’t ideal. It is not what we want to do. But we do it anyhow. It is not odd at all. It is working against the odds. You see, we cannot afford to slumber while starvation roars in our faces. We cannot afford to pity ourselves and slide into the pits of poverty when we have hands and feet. We may not have the education, the power and privilege of some but we do have the will to survive. We are South Africans. Out of hurt we hope, out of defeat we dare, out of struggle we strive, out of pain we plan. Let us not go weary of fighting every day to get by. Ma Afrika its a good morning.
