We wanted to send around our Tennessean feature that ran in print Saturday morning promoting Marks lecture yesterday. The piece is also a nice plug for the OConnor Method in general. Thanks again for helping us set up a phoner on such short notice! Full text and link are below. - Josh The Tennessean tennessean/story/entertainment/music/2014/05/02/mark-oconnor-free-lecture/8630401/ Violin great Mark OConnor to present free lecture Famed violinist Mark OConnor spent the 90s winning awards including Grammys and CMAs. He partnered with similarly skilled and popular artists on projects including The New Nashville Cats, which roped in Vince Gill, Steve Warner and Ricky Skaggs. OConnor moved away from Nashville more than a decade ago and hasnt played in Music City in seven years. On Sunday, hes back. OConnor will give an overview and demonstration of his OConnor Method of teaching violin and strings at 3 p.m. at Belmont Universitys Harton Recital Hall in Massey Performing Arts Center. His lecture is free and open to the public. Its an all-inclusive method using American music and creativity for children to learn how to play right from the very beginning, said OConnor. They are getting all the standard violin playing techniques along with this beautiful (American) music with rhythm and harmony and great, great tunes. OConnor said the development of a teaching method that incorporated American music was long overdue and that he was in the right place in my career to pull in all of my resources and my experiences to create a method. We have hundreds of years of experience (playing stringed instruments) and literature that weve created in this part of the world, OConnor said. I want to use this incredible history of musical literature and performing and styles and (make it accessible), and the kids love it. They are inspired by it. They want to practice. It doesnt sound like etudes and scales. But OConnors trip to Nashville isnt all business. He plans to meet up with some musician buddies for dinner and visit with his son, Harvard-educated mandolin player, Forrest OConnor who recently moved to town to launch a music career. He has a duo called WiseWater and theyre already playing gigs around town, said the proud dad. Theyre already talking to some highfalutin producers. You could be seeing them on the charts pretty soon.
