We wanted to share the story of our last rescue of 2014, which involved 2 newborn puppies, a group of dedicated volunteers, and a hero mama dog named Ginger. We were contacted the morning of New Years Eve by a local vet- a mama Shih Tzu in severe distress and 2 puppies just barely born had been brought there. Mama was purchased, a puppy mill dog, and her owners had decided to make a few bucks by breeding her. She was unable to birth a third, deceased puppy, and was in rough shape- and these babies, just an hour or so old, had no mama to feed them. Our first thought was beagle mama May who is still nursing- one of our volunteers dropped everything, rushed to the office, and brought the babies to Mays foster home. May TRIED so hard to feed these babies but their tiny mouths were just too tiny for her beagle body! THANK GOODNESS we had another nursing mama in little yorkie Ginger adoptapet/pet/12095493 ! She came to us mid December, and had 3 puppies a few days later. Her foster moms daughter rushed over, picked up the babies, and she and Gingers foster mom were able to coax Ginger to feed these extra little mouths! The foster family is working night and day to give these babies the best possible chance to survive and thrive, as their mama recovers from emergency surgery. They are not out of the woods by any means, but they have a CHANCE! We dont usually have any nursing moms- we love puppies, but tend to take the dogs that the other rescues leave behind. We never want to be one of the rescues that takes the young, healthy ones and leaves the ones that really need us, so the fact that we had not one, but two nursing moms is certainly not normal for us but we are so thankful that we did. And we are so fortunate to have the team we do of amazing volunteers, and a little hero yorkie who has adopted these two tiny little mouths and is doing double duty right now. Ginger gets a rib eye steak from us!
