We watched this mechanical remake the other night and Im frankly appalled. How is it even possible to set a more or less contemporary story in Detroit without even once mentioning or referring to the economic collapse of the city? To answer my own question: you only display that sort of indifference to reality if youre based in Los Angeles -- physically and/or mentally -- and got into the moviemaking business because you thought it would be really cool to blow up stuff for a living. Director Padilha supposedly studied literature and politics at Oxford though youd never know it from the witless and simplistic performance he turns in here. Not a single trace of the mordant fun had by Paul Verhoeven with the 1987 original. And anodyne Swedish-American Joel Kinnaman still isnt quite leading man material. He never will be. Veteran hams Oldman and Keaton are having as much fun as theyre allowed to within the boundaries of a seriously dumbed down script. Finally: are we quite certain Abbie Cornish and Kate Bosworth arent the same person? I for one cant seem to tell their many blonde damsels in distress apart. This ones a rental at most. The smart thing to do would be to wait for it to show up on cable in a couple of months and watch it with half an eye then.
