We welcome back two of our nurses Gemma Yates and Anne-Marie - TopicsExpress

We welcome back two of our nurses Gemma Yates and Anne-Marie Sturt, who have just returned from a trip to Gambia, to experience first-hand and continue the work that the charity We Are MAD for Africa (which is the same charity Tim Phillips is raising money for by taking part in the Scottish Islands Peaks Race) carries out. Gemma tells us about the trip: Whilst we were out there our tasks were to complete the painting of the school grounds so it could be officially opened as a registered Ofsted equivalent school. We decorated walls with the alphabet, numbers, colours and shapes to aid the childrens education. Whilst the girls completed this the boys started to reinforce the fencing around where the women grow their crops with a brick wall. This was in order to deter the animals from getting under the fence to the crops. Whilst out there we also saw first-hand how animals are used and worked by the people. In the near future we are looking to fund getting another donkey for the community we help. Our intention is to get a female in which we can breed from. Sadly due to the expense of veterinary treatment their previous donkey died due to an unknown cause, we are looking into ways of preventing this and educating the community in the future. It was a fantastic experience to be involved in with an amazing charity and great group of people. We look forward to going out again next year to carry on the work to enable the people to have an education and sustain themselves. wearemad4africa.org.uk
