We went and saw the movie Lucy today. This movie had so much potential. The movie starts off with the co-mingling of stock footage clips and live action storytelling. Its an interesting way of bring you up to speed and immersing them into a pretty simple story line. Scarlett Johansson is great as the title role and I will dare say that her acting expands beyond what we are accustomed to. Dont get too excited though, her character requires very little after the first 20 minutes of the movie. Lucy is one of those movies that are somewhat ambitious but decides to rely on heavy handed CGI when a modicum of decent writing would have been a better choice. About halfway through the movie, everything falls apart. For starters, they evolved the Lucy character far way too fast and took her to ridiculous heights. This left so many gaping plot holes in the story and face palm moments, the film just disintegrates. The film tries to be too many different types of film at once. It wants to be artsy. It wants to be in action thriller. It wants to teach humanity a lesson. The only thing it manages to be is a mess. We could talk about the film marrative of the movie. We could also talk about the horrible misguided attempts at understanding the complexity of the human brain. But lets not. Lucy will make humanity dumber for having watched it. 4 out of 10 stars. Wait to watch it on Redbox.
