We went to Senegal last year and took the boat over to Gore - TopicsExpress

We went to Senegal last year and took the boat over to Gore Island. I walked through the slave house and stood in the "Door of No Return" they had the slaves sectioned off and they had the shackles and other instruments they used to trap and bind the slaves in. Right behind the door there is a kind of holding station on both sides. Outside the door is like a trench between the building and the wall. The gentleman that gave us the tour was very informative. It was interesting to walk through the town where Black Africans now live and imagine the brutality that was experience there. In the center of the island they were many playing soccer when we went but that was where the slaves were brought to be sold to 5 different countries. After our tour and visit to some of the houses on the island we went to the island beach. I did not change to get in the water. I opted out and took in the island instead. My daughter walked away from the beach in her bathing suit to join me where I was sitting with our belongings and commotions ensued. They speak French and Wallof and we speak neither but in translation we found that it is illegal to walk away from the beach area dressed in a bathing suit. Several people including law enforcement were trying to explain that she could not leave the beach area dressed inappropriately in a mere bathing suit or they would give her a ticket and she would have to face charges. Africa was refreshing nothing like what I expected. Demographic statistics informed us that crime where we were is 1/5 of what it is here in the US. People where out on every corner enjoying the evening. Neighborhood stores everywhere. When I got back to the States the food here upset my stomach and it took almost 2 weeks for my stomach to settle down. I fell in love with the food...
