We were able to get two of the three State Runner Up finishes, in 2001 vs Tularosa and 1981 vs Moriarty. The third one, and very interesting to me, was in 1961 against Carrizozo. It is interesting because we did not win our first playoff game until 1978, meaning that Estancia played for a state title before winning a playoff game. How is that possible? In 1961, There were two districts in Class C, one with the northern teams and one with the southern teams. Estancia was the northern champ, beating McCurdy, Menaul, Dulce, Tierra Amarilla (now Escalante) and Chama. They played the champ of the southern district,Carrizozo, for the state championship.
