We were able to shower and change and then we did something that I - TopicsExpress

We were able to shower and change and then we did something that I had been waiting six weeks for...we bought different clothes! Prior to this we were limited to what we could carry in our backpacks. Sandra and I were minimalist when it came to the packs. Plus, outfits had to be hand washed and of a material that would dry overnight since we were moving around so much. Now we were free to buy an extra bag and actually get some souvenirs and new clothes. Of course all that was available were Berber clothes, but that was fine with us. It was exotic and fun to get outfits from the area, and we welcomed the light, loose, comfortable feel (plus they went well with our turbans). We spent a good amount of time shopping in Ahmeds village of Merzouga.....at his cousins store of course. (They are no fools). So we hit the road again, heading northwest. We went through a small town called Ouarzazate, pronounced war-za-zat (we kept calling it wheres it at). It is well known in the movie industry as the Hollywood of Morocco because it has one of the largest movie studios in the world. Atlas Studios has made countless films, including Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, The Mummy, Indiana Jones, etc. Ahmed told us that they are currently making a new movie called King Tut with Tom Cruise and that Cruise was in town now. We kept an eye out for Tom but no luck. It was strange to be going through this dusty poor village, then suddenly see the vast studio with its huge Egyptian figures that have been used as props. As we passed out of town, there was a big Disney-like statue of a movie reel. It seemed so North American when compared with the contrasting surroundings.
