We were at Walmart this morning, bought our groceries and went to the truck to load up. Tiny yelping was heard a few vehicles down from us. A tiny Chihuahua was in a little tracker type jeep. Windows all around and only the drivers side opened about 8. Hubby went to the little dog, while I went inside to report it. The lady at the desk announced there was a dog in distress in the parking lot. Stressing...the dog was in distress, hassling. I left to go back outside just as the man was pulling out. He stopped and asked if I turned him in, I told him I did. He explained he only went in for a minute to get medicine. I told him mere minutes are all it takes to overheat an animal...a child....an elderly person. He told me there was water and the window was down. However, when the heat index is supposed to be close to 110 degrees for the day...and you leave a small, precious animal in the car, which magnifies the intense heat...there usually isnt always a happy ending. I felt sorry for the man. He was hugging and kissing his baby. Two other men came swiftly out...there were going to get the dog out, had the owner not arrived. He was lectured, yet again, about the dangers of leaving an animal in a vehicle when the temperature, and heat index, are dangerous. The same goes for children and elderly/ Pay attention to your surrounding. Even if you think you may be interfering and do not want to get involved...think about what the outcome come possibly be from doing nothing. My boys learned a lesson today, I just wish it hadnt been by example.
