We were ready for this storm! Fortunately, because of the cautious forewarning, yesterday was spent washing and sanitizing many, many bird cages. All of the parrots were moved from the outdoor aviary into individual cages and are now housed in our living room, master bedroom, Lynettes bathroom and the spare bedroom. It took 5 hours + to set everything up for all the parrots. Why should it take so long, you ask? Sanitizing individual cages, perches, bird toys, water & food dishes and other enrichment products, then placing each portable cage where every bird is comfortable. The last thing we need is a lot of unhappy squawking! Some of the parrots are not comfortable near mirrors, others like to be up high up, etc. We had everybody settled in by 2:00PM yesterday. All of the miniature horses have taken up residence in the stalls in the barn. The big horses all have their cold weather blankets on, and waterproof horse rain jackets on. The dogs are sleeping in the living room and the cats have a large indoor room, (the old kitchen,) attached to a 1 1/2 story covered outdoor room, The special needs fox is in Lynettes room and the caracal has a temporary room to himself. The donkeys and goats are sheltered now. All of the exotics have been moved out of their outdoor habitats and into a separate, designated, wildlife building on the property which has electricity, heat and water. The camels and the the hybrid zebra donkey are our only complication. None of them want to be housed. We put Hump-free in a large stall in the barn and he was clearly unhappy indicated by his pacing and bellowing. Keesa, however, walked right in and was content. ZZ Top was not going in no matter what! So Hump-Free and ZZ Top are under a shelter, but outside. We did the best we could, taking into consideration their comfort level. Now we just have to wait out the storm.
