We were recently asked to identify one celebrity to speak on our behalf. After posting the person I chose, and being in a mostly liberal ideology college, you can imagine the backlash. When you read this, you will understand why I chose her. Stacey Dash can speak on my behalf anytime!!! imdb/name/nm0001107/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1 This assignment was hard for me because I am a unique person, and I don’t like people to speak on my behalf – especially when I am quite capable of expressing myself with clarity. But, if I had to ‘hire a celebrity spokesperson to speak on my behalf in how I experience culture’, it would definitely be Stacey Dash. Not too many people know of her, except maybe by the witty sidekick of Alicia Silverstone in the movie Clueless. Dash received a lot of criticism, hate mail and even death threats after publicly endorsing Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney. Her reluctance to back down despite repeated calls for her death is further proof she is a strong, independent woman who thinks for herself regardless of the backlash. Ironically, this week’s chapter was learning about ‘pop culture as an arena for Hegemony’. And that is exactly what I see today. Pop culture is the agency being used to try and dominate the masses into submission of an ideology. So people claim we now live in an all-inclusive culture? Girl, please! Sure we do; as long as you go with the flow. Well, gag me with a fork -- I go to the beat of my own drum. And I won’t back down just because it’s not popular.” Dash is a strong and independent woman as she continued her support for Romney despite the death threats. I didn’t choose her because she is female either. I chose her because she is committed to her beliefs and is no hypocrite. I remember reading about a statement from Louise Pennell, co-founder of the media training company Clark Pennell, where she said that ‘the fame received by Dash because of her “controversial comments” has reminded people in the entertainment industry that Dash is in need of work’. But, if you look at her file, she’s been working steady for years BEFORE and AFTER Mitt, lol. (see above link). Funny how Ms. Pennell doesn’t acknowledge this same behavior in Jim Carrey when he insulted millions of law-abiding and responsible gun owners when he attacked them with his words and little insipid video. (AND, who later had to publicly apologize for his words). These “class deputies” are not effective. So, why would I pick her? Because she is a direct representation of how important it IS to go against ideological production. Ideological production is nothing more than a purpose to create followers, but what they fail to see is that this very practice goes against the freedom of being AN INDIVIDUAL!! I believe the author called these massive followers, “cultural dupes = an updated form of opium for the people.” As a woman, I get insulted when I see ads targeting women and trying to sell them on this “war on women.” There is no war against me. I don’t blame men for my mistakes, and actually respect men. I find it insulting that these political parties want to make women a one-issue voter group. Or, that we base our decisions on our lady parts instead of our smarts? And what is this *&##!~!! about -- ‘it’s time to select the first female president’? Shouldnt we choose the RIGHT PERSON for the job? Do we need affirmative action to select our presidents now? Typically, I don’t allow women holding picket signs and politicians, (who know nothing about me personally), speak on my behalf, but if I had to choose one person, Stacey Dash would be my choice!
