We were recently asked why it costs more to spay an animal when she is in heat. The answer is simple: she is at greater risk of experiencing complications during the procedure. When a female is in heat, the uterus often becomes friable, meaning that it has the tendency to fall apart when handled. This makes it more difficult to place sutures, as the sutures often tear right through the tissue as the tissue crumbles. This can cause increased bleeding during the procedure, and puts your pet at risk. We STRONGLY encourage all of our clients to help us minimize unnecessary risks by waiting until AFTER the heat cycle has completed to go ahead with the procedure. Typically, female dogs go into heat every six months, and the heat cycle can last up to a month. Cats are a little different. The textbook answer is that a cat goes into heat every six weeks and the cycle lasts for a week. But from experience, we can tell you that an un-spayed cat is in a perpetual heat cycle. Spaying a cat in heat is less risky than spaying a dog in heat - but it is still a risk. If you have any questions about spaying your pet or the heat cycle of your pet, give us a call and make an appointment! - Alpine Animal Staff (928) 774 9441
