...We were the first in our community to attend university thanks to my dads advanced attitude that even as women, we needed to be independent. He always told us that an education at degree level would allow our process of absorbing and interpreting information reach a more sophisticated level and that our perspective on life would develop intellectually. There was no pressure to become lawyers or doctors at the end of our education - my dad claimed that he would be happy if we ended up sweeping the streets as long as our outlook on life and our attitude towards others superseded beyond the simple. This intellectual viewpoint reflected a large part of my dads personality. He had never had the opportunity to use his intelligence in the wider world to achieve personal goals and ambitions but in spite of this his best conversations were always the ones that involved a higher level of understanding. Because of this love of knowledge my dad made our journey in to higher education a smooth one. My mums ambition for us was a traditional one - to work a simple job after school so that we could be occupied with the business of saving money for our wedding! It was only when we became professionals that she realised the importance of an education, even for mere girls.... From the chapter University days
