We woke up in Lago Agrio to rain. What else? Were in the rain forest and heading into the jungle in 17-foot fiberglass canoes that we would be paddling for two days to the Magic River Lodge in the Cuyabeno Nature Preserve. From the lodge, we would explore the lagoon, hike through the jungle and visit a village. But first we had to get cash from an ATM machine in a town that the guide books recommended to avoid because it is a roughneck border town with Columbia. I was glad to see armed guards near the machines. No one tried to rob us. Our group was small. Only 10 people and we waited for all the motorized tours to head down the river to the other lodges. Diego, our guide, was very knowledgable about the plants and animals and surviving in the jungle. More jungle stories later. We are back in Cumbaya visiting Marta Romoleroux, our home away from home.
