We would like to introduce the Johannesburg Migrant Health Forum - TopicsExpress

We would like to introduce the Johannesburg Migrant Health Forum which the African Centre for Migration & Society is also a member. The Johannesburg Migrant Health Forum is a consortium of organisations concerned about migrants access to health services. The forum brings together practitioners, researchers, CBOs, NGOs, international agencies and advocacy groups. It was established in 2008 to explore the health needs and health-related challenges experienced by migrants in Johannesburg. This includes consideration of access to HIV services and continuity of HIV treatment for migrants living with HIV, and to ensure preservation of human rights and desirable public health outcomes for all in Johannesburg. As health outcomes are associated with the socio-economic and cultural context of populations, the Forum considers how determinants of health affect the health of migrants residing in Johannesburg. This includes exploring access to basic services – including healthcare, housing and secure livelihoods, and the impact of legislation on the health of migrant groups. The Forum meets bi-monthly at the Wits Reproductive Health Institute (WrHI) and the chair rotates among members. The purpose of the forum is to: support member organisations in taking action to address the public health needs of migrants; share knowledge and experience; disseminate research; avoid duplication of effort; and facilitate collaboration where appropriate (e.g. the TB screening campaign at the Methodist Church in August 2009). The Forum will attempt to use combined resources to address challenges as they rise (e.g. addressing the public health implications of the resumption of deportations of undocumented Zimbabwean migrants in 2011). The Forum is not an advocacy group but does gather field experience and disseminate research findings and experience to relevant civil society organisations and authorities as appropriate.
