We would like to send a very special happy birthday pant-hoot to Scarlett! She turns 35 today. You can support Scarlett by adopting her. savethechimps.org/meet-the-chimps/#/Scarlett Scarlett has been through a lot in life. She was born at the Coulston Foundation laboratory. She was immediately taken from her mother, Cherry and was sent to the nursery to be raised by humans. Every month she was anesthetized in order to take blood samples for research studies. When Scarlett was three years old, she was sent to another lab for research. Scarlett returned to the Coulston Foundation at the age of 16 to become part of the breeding program. She had two children, Jude and Joey, who were both taken from her immediately after their births. Save the Chimps rescued Scarlett in September 2002, when we took custody of the chimpanzees at the former Coulston Foundation. Scarlett lived alone in a small barren cell. Save the Chimps also learned that Scarlett has epilepsy. STC’s veterinarians placed her on anti-seizure medications so that she could live with other chimps. In 2008, Scarlett became temporarily paralyzed due to an unusual spinal injury. The injury may have been the result of a seizure. Scarlett was given around- the-clock intensive care, and regained mobility after a month. She was able to rejoin her chimpanzee friends, and we were inspired by her determination and spirit. Scarlett moved to Florida and was released onto an island with a select group of chimps known to be gentle with her. Initially she was not a fan of roaming the island, and preferred to stay close to the building. She did fall in love with the Florida sunshine however, and basked in the warm rays, her face turned upward in obvious enjoyment. Over time Scarlett began venturing further onto the island, feeling the grass and earth beneath her feet. Today Scarlett lives with a small group of friends. Thanks to medication and expert veterinary treatment, Scarlett has been seizure-free for many years, and continues to enjoy sunbathing on her island home.
