We would like to wish Spencer a happy 28th birthday! Spencer was born December 14, 1986 to his mother Sally and father Tarzan at The Coulston Foundation, a now-defunct research lab in Alamogordo, NM. Spencer was taken from his mother at birth, and raised by humans in the laboratory nursery. When he was just a baby of 18 months old, the laboratory entered Spencer into a study in which his liver was repeatedly biopsied. Spencer was used in at least two other lengthy and invasive research protocols before he was finally rescued in 2002 by Save the Chimps. Today Spencer is a member of Tapiocas Group, where he lives with 23 other chimpanzees. Spencers mother Sally is also a member of Tapiocas Group, but they sadly do not appear to realize they are mother and son. Spencer and his family live on a large island with grass, hills, trees, and climbing platforms. The day Spencer was released to his island home was the first day that Spencer had ever set foot onto grass, having only ever known a world full of concrete and steel. Spencer is a handsome, outgoing chimpanzee with lots of energy!
