Weaning Ourselves Isaiah 55:8-9 (New Living Translation) “My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.” Romans 11:33-34 (New Living Translation) Oh, how great are God’s riches and wisdom and knowledge! How impossible it is for us to understand his decisions and his ways! For who can know the Lord’s thoughts? Who knows enough to give him advice? Psalm 131:1a-2b (New Living Translation) Lord, my heart is not proud; my eyes are not haughty. I don’t concern myself with matters too great or too awesome for me to grasp. Instead, I have calmed and quieted myself, like a weaned child who no longer cries for its mother’s milk. Yes, like a weaned child is my soul within me. O Israel, put your hope in the Lord—now and always God wants us to seek wisdom, understanding and knowledge but we must realize that we will never be all knowing. It’s our carnality, our pride that makes us want to know everything and have all the answers. That desire can be very frustrating, mature Christians cease from that wondering and find rest in the fact that we can’t understand everything and we don’t need to. It’s a child that asks why, why, why all the time. We wean ourselves from that by trusting in the Lord and accepting His unquestioned will for our lives as we wait patiently for His plans to unfold. Proverbs 20:24 (New Living Translation) The Lord directs our steps, so why try to understand everything along the way?
