Weather Forecast for Kent – Monday 11th Aug ’14. You’d never think that it was on this day 11 years ago when temperatures climbed up to a skin blisteringly 38 C (100 F) in parts of Kent (it was a more “sensible” 32 C here at Folketone due to coastal sea breeze). Today, thanks to ex-Bertha now being firmly anchored over the North Sea, we are quite unlikely to see a repeat of that intense heat, instead we are now under a brisk and somewhat unstable westerly airstream that is of polar origin – hence that distinctively fresh Autumn feel. TODAY . . . Although we can expect some good sunny spells, showers are going to be rattling through our region during the course of the day, more especially so in the afternoon where I cannot rule one or two of those to be on the heavy side with possible local thunder and hail. But, as always with such a showery set up, it’ll all be hit and miss stuff so some of us may get to have a soaking and others may well get away with it by staying dry. In other words, it’s basically a game of shower-roulette so don’t ask if it is safe to leave the washing out at 2.45 pm at Kingsdown or it’ll stay sunny for that visit to Port Lympne, just go for it and hope that everything does turn out better than expected. Actually, a side thought; those living over the South Coast may do well to look out towards the Channel and be lucky enough to spot a funnel cloud forming harmlessly over the sea if those showers get large enough. Temperatures will be sticking close to average values at 18 C to 20 C (64 F t0 68 F) under a fresh to occasionally strong south wind, it may tend to get quite blustery in any of the heavier showers if you are unlucky enough. Can’t complain about the air quality, that’s for sure! TONIGHT . . . Those showers should become much fewer in their numbers with more in the way of clear breaks. That brisk south westerly wind will make the minimum temperatures of 13 C to 15 C (55 F to 59 F) feel quite fresh and airy, thus making for a comfortable night’s sleep. REST OF WEEK . . . Feeling fresh with sunny spells and showers for the next few days as we here at Kent remain under a brisk south westerly or westerly airstream, all thanks to ex-Bertha being firmly anchored over the North Sea. Again, it’ll all be in the luck where some of us get to see the best of the sunshine while others get to have a soaking. In other words, rather mixed overall but it won’t be anything like what we had when ex-Bertha passed over us yesterday. WEEKEND . . . Hopefully it’ll tend to become drier and sunnier for longer with lighter winds as we go into the weekend, that’ll make it feel a little bit warmer for it but that’s me getting ahead of myself.
