Weather Garden update Mike Breunling WSAW We often hear the early spring is the time to fertilize the lawn, but there are those who suggest the first feeding should wait until around Memorial Day. I agree with this. In most years there is enough moisture in the ground from the melting of the snow, as well as the early spring rain to provide for good initial growth. This certainly is the case this year. Fertilizing now can actually lead to too much lush growth, forcing more frequent mowing. Instead, be sure to rake the lawn to remove the dead grass from last year, then mow short. I usually cut the first time at 2, then raise the mower to 2 1/2 for the next one or two cuts. This will actually promote the growth of more grass blades and a thicker lawn. As far as the weeds are concerned, if the numbers are few, then try to dig them out, or provide a spot spray. There are products available for this at most lawn and garden shops that are easy to use. Bagged (dry) broadleaf weed products may provide more chemical than is needed. If there are a lot of weeds out there, then the general application may be beneficial. Ill have more lawn and garden updates soon!
