Weather Update Fort Kent, Maine & Vicinity 7:15 AM ET | Monday, December 8, 2014 ***Winter Storm Watch in effect from December 9, 5:00 PM EST until December 11, 1:00 AM EST*** A strong area of 1045-mb high pressure is presently centered over the region with temperatures on the personal weather station reading -9.5°F / -23.0°C at the present time. A thin layer of cloud/fog has formed a couple hundred feet aloft which has kept temperatures from falling to their potential lows around the dew point of -13°F. Today will see clear skies early give way to increasing clouds as the day progresses as cold air dams up over western and northern Maine while sufficient moisture is picked up in the return flow around the high pressure ridge moving east to create a cloud deck. Meanwhile, a low pressure is expected to form off the Mid-Atlantic Coast and slowly move northwards. Consequently, a long-duration precipitation event is anticipated from Tuesday evening through Thursday morning. Presently, 6-10 inches of snowfall may occur along with 1/4 inch of ice in northern Maine. Travel will be hazardous due to sleet and ice on area roadways. The exact track of the low and the influx of warmer air Wednesday will determine whether these current projected totals rise or fall. Currently, around 1 inch of liquid equivalent precipitation is expected. Todays high in Fort Kent will be near 12°F with a low tonight around 9°. Temperatures are expected to rise overnight and Tuesday reaching a daytime high of 27°F by Tuesday afternoon. Lows drift down a degree or two Tuesday night to about 25°F. Snow is expected Tuesday night and Wednesday morning before mixing with sleet and freezing rain Wednesday afternoon and evening. Snow, sleet, and freezing rain persist through Thursday morning before tapering to snow showers as the low pressure system moves away. One positive outlook is that temperatures do not appear to fall off dramatically after this system departs with highs in the lower 30s and lows in the mid-20s at the end of the week. _____________________________ Yesterdays Weather in Fort Kent Sunday, December 7, 2014 (Personal Weather Station Data) High 25°F / -4°C recorded at 12:00 AM Low -4°F / -20°C recorded at 11:26 PM Peak Wind Speed 21 mph / 34 kmh from the North recorded at 11:28 AM Precipitation None _____________________________ Disclaimer Forecasts are for informational purposes only and based on personal weather station data, various computer forecast models, and information that the National Weather Service, NOAA, and other weather resources provide.
