Weather Update Fort Kent, Maine & the Upper Saint John Valley 7:15 am ET | Friday, October 31, 2014 Todays Halloween Weather Mostly cloudy skies this morning become overcast this afternoon as low pressure moving north from the southeast coast begins to intensify as it moves towards eastern Nova Scotia over the course of the next two days. Current MOS guidance indicates that todays high will be near 44° with a low tonight about 33°. Northwest winds near calm will shift to the northeast and increase to near 4 mph overnight. The Trick or Treat period tonight should be cloudy and cool, but dry for those enjoying the annual festival across the Valley. ____________________________ Saturday, November 1 & Sunday, November 2, 2014 A Noreaster looks set to develop off the mid-Atlantic coast and move towards eastern Nova Scotia. The exact track of the storm system will determine the amount of precipitation that will occur in the state. Presently, the more easterly solution will cause winter precipitation to mainly affect southeastern Maine (Washington/Hancock), but a more westerly track towards the Bay of Fundy will produce winter precipitation further inland. So, based on current model indications, Fort Kent residents can expect Saturday to be mostly cloudy with temperatures only reaching about 41° with a slight chance for rain showers during the day with the possibility of some snow mixed in early. By Saturday evening, the strengthening low will be near Cape Cod with chances for precipitation increasing for the County. There will be a chance for snow through the overnight period with a low in Fort Kent near 28°. North winds increase Saturday afternoon into the 12-17 mph range with some wind chills into the middle 20s. A chance for snow continues into Sunday as the low moves towards eastern Nova Scotia (based on current model guidance). Sundays high reaches about 33° with a low Sunday night near 25°. North winds will be in the 12-18 mph range. Now for the big question: how much snow, if any? Based on QPF and winter precipitation models based on the current track scenario, Fort Kent can expect around 1-2 inches with between 1/10th and 1/4th an inch of liquid equivalent. Further west, St. Francis and the Allagash will get a trace to 1 inch while further east, St. Agatha, Madawaska, Grand Isle, and Van Buren can expect 2-4 inches. Caribou, Presque Isle, and Houlton may see 4-6 inches. Again, all this is dependent on the final track of this system--a more westward track will shift and increase these totals in the northerly portions while a track further east could lower these projections. The NWS Caribou is waiting to access at least another model run before issuing any watches or warnings later today. ____________________________ Further Ahead High pressure builds in for Monday and Tuesday which see highs in the middle 30s and lower 40s with a low Monday night in the lower 20s and in the middle 30s Tuesday night. A frontal system approaches later Tuesday bringing a chance for rain showers Wednesday and Thursday. Highs Wednesday are expected in the middle 40s with the lower 40s Thursday and a low Wednesday night in the middle 30s. ____________________________ Yesterdays Weather in Fort Kent (Thursday, October 30, 2014) High 48° recorded at 11:43 am Low 38° recorded at 7:45 am Peak Wind Gust 17 mph from the North recorded at 2:34 pm Daily Precipitation 0.00 inches Current Precipitation Totals 4.09 inches/month | 23.81 inches/year ____________________________ Forecasts are for informational purposes only and based on personal weather station data, various computer forecast models, and information that the National Weather Service, NOAA, and other weather resources provide.
