Weather Wayback Machine: October 29-31 1991 - The Perfect Storm started as a frontal wave on October 28th east of Nova Scotia. At the same time a strong ridge of high pressure was building from the eastern US to Greenland. This ridge blocked the normal movement of the low forcing it to move towards the southwest. At the same time Hurricane Grace was moving towards the east-northeast off the US East Coast and added its energy to the developing storm significantly deepening the low during the 29th and 30th. The developing storm low reach its peak intensity on the 30th south of Nova Scotia with winds of 50-60 knots and significant wave heights of 30-40 feet. Some unsubstantiated reports indicated a few peak waves may have reached as high as 100 ft. Along the New England coast on October 30-31, wind gusts of above hurricane force were reported in Massachusetts (68 kt/78mph at Chatham, 64knt/74mph at Thatcher Island, 59kt/68mph at Marblehead, 56kt/64mph at Blue Hill Observatory and 55kt/63mph at Newport, RI.
