Weather affects just about everything. From our daily routines, to big events like concerts and football games, to our family vacation plans. The outcome of these events is often dependent upon the weather. The events of September 11, 2001 are no different. On September 10, 2001 a cold front was moving into New England from the west. Strong thunderstorms were in the forecast for parts of eastern New York. The front passed through later that day and high pressure settled into the region. The cold front left the area- including New York City- with clear blue skies and crisp fall weather. You may recall how beautiful the weather was from the footage of September 11th. If the cold front had passed through the next day- on September 11th- it is likely that there would have been cloudy skies, rain, thunderstorms, and possible *flight delays*. The cold front wasnt the only active weather in the Northeast during this time period. Hurricane Erin- a category 2 storm as of September 10th- was located off the Eastern seaboard out in the Atlantic. The system that brought the cold front into New England helped steer Hurricane Erin away from the coast, and off to the northeast. If there had been no cold front, Hurricane Erin likely would have made a more northwesterly turn. Had the storm been located a couple hundred miles to the west, New England could have been dealing with a hurricane on or near the coastline on September 11th. So, WHAT IF the weather pattern been slightly different? September 11, 2001 may have turned out much differently. Never underestimate the power of weather.
