Weather warning Amber weather warning for Highlands, Eilean Siar, Orkney, and Argyll & Bute. An Amber “Be Prepared” weather alert has been issued for strong winds for the Highlands, Eilean Siar, Orkney, and Argyll & Bute (Mull and Tiree). Winds will increase late on Thursday evening, with gusts of 80 to 90 mph likely across the Western Isles, Orkney and north & north-western Scotland. Gusts of more than 100 mph are possible in some places. Police Scotland and its partner agencies are warning the public to be prepared for the potential for disruption to transport, including bridge restrictions, as well as to power supplies, and the possibility of structural damage. Very large waves may also lead to dangerous conditions along some coasts. In addition, a Yellow ‘Be Aware’ warning for wind has also been issued for most of the rest of Scotland. These warnings are valid from 10pm on Thursday 8 January until midday on Friday 9 January 2015. Superintendent Stewart Carle, Road Policing said: During this period of extreme weather, Police Scotland Road Policing crews will be patrolling the road network in order to keep people safe. Please be aware of the advice being issued, and drive with extra caution and use common sense in challenging situations.” If you are travelling you should ensure that you and your vehicle are adequately prepared for the conditions. Make sure you have sufficient fuel and supplies such as warm clothing, food and water in the event you are delayed for several hours.
