WebCup 2014 09-10-2014 Seychelles vies for cup Team BlueFire, winner of the WebCup Seychelles 2014, flew to Mauritius yesterday to compete against the best teams in the Indian Ocean. After winning the first ever Webcup competition to be held in Seychelles in June, team BlueFire left for Mauritius yesterday where they will be representing the country at the WebCup 2014 Final. The event will take place at the Cyber City in Ebene from Saturday 11 to Sunday 12 October. Participants take part individually or in teams comprising a maximum of four people (amateurs, students or professionals). They have 24 hours to make and develop a website on a subject revealed only at the start of the competition. In June, teams from Reunion, Mauritius, Madagascar, Mayotte, Comoros and Seychelles took part simultaneously in local competitions. In Seychelles, Victoria Computer Services (VCS), a leading ICT company, was the main organiser of the first round of the WebCup competition which was held concurrently in five other Indian Ocean countries. The winners from each country will be facing each other this weekend for the finals of the competition. For BlueFire team - comprising Hervé Chang-Yunn, Alvin Lebon, Anisha Mangroo and Jean-Francois Rose - this is an exciting opportunity to measure up against the best web specialists and enthusiasts in the Indian Ocean. “We are really proud to be representing Seychelles at this international event and with this being our first participation at this level, our objective is to produce our best performance and show the region we can build a professional and fully functional website within 24 hours” said Hervé Chang-Yunn, team leader of BlueFire. “We realize that it will be a tough challenge but our competitive edge will see us through as we work best when under pressure!” added Mr. Chang-Yunn. The Webcup is an annual event that was first introduced in 2010 by the Reunion Island-based Webcup Association, with the aim of promoting Information Communications Technology (ICT) around a fun and educational event. This year, the Webcup Final event is being organised and financed by the ministry of Information Technology and Communication of Mauritius along with other ICT partners and sponsors. The Webcup Association has expressed its wish to hold the Webcup final in Seychelles next year. Team BlueFire is accompanied by Gilbert Lebon, managing director of VCS and Elaine Montalban, executive support manager at VCS. The contest held in June in Seychelles saw only two teams compete in designing a website for a fictional character running for President in just 24 hours. Participants had to design an entire webpage from scratch, which meant a non-stop, 24 hour marathon in order to complete their presentation. Team BlueFire was able to edge out the one-man team of Jean-François Rose, who had to multitask his way throughout the 24-hour time challenge. Jean-François Rose who is the Information Technology (IT) manager at Maia Resort was alone to take part in the competition as members of his team “couldn’t make it as planned”. He said he decided to stay on and work alone because otherwise, “there would have been only one team”. But being alone meant that Mr Rose had to “put together the graphics, contents and entries as I went along, but unfortunately I had some last minute issues with the server – which meant I could not complete the entire website.” BlueFire team leader Mr Chang-Yun subsequently expressed his disappointment with the level of participation. “It was sad that the competition did not attract as many competitors,” he said. “We participated out of national pride – as we are going to represent Seychelles in the WebCup final. We will participate next year and I hope to see more teams taking part,” he added, while pointing out that Mauritius had 20 teams of four members in its national WebCup.
