Wed, 11.27 Tomorrow, its Thanksgiving day. So, I learned about the history of Thanksgiving in the class. Thanksgiving is one of the most popular holidays in the United States. Traditionally, Thanksgiving is a holiday that Americans spend together with their families who enjoy a Thanksgiving meal which usually includes the traditional Thanksgiving turkey. Wendy, my home owner, is now seasoning turkey with spices in order to prepare for tomorrows holiday. Anyway, Here is the story of Thanksgiving. The Pilgrims, who celebrated the firs thanksgiving in America, were fleeing religious persecution in their native England. So they decided to travel to the new world. After the long trip, they arrived at Plymouth, named by Captain John Smith in 1614. The Pilgrims biggest concern was attacked by the local Native Americans Indians. But they were a peaceful group and id not prove to be a threat against Pilgrims expectations. The first winter was devastating to the Pilgrims. The cold snow was exceptionally heavy, interfering with the workers as they tried to construct their settlement. At that tme, the Native Americans, called indian now, started to help Pilgrims. They taught the Pilgrims how to tap the maple trees for sap as well as distinguish between poisonous plants and medicinal ones. In addition, Pilgrims learned about how to plant the Indian corn. Thanks to aid, the Pilgrims had raised enough crops to keep themselves alive during the long coming winter. The Pilgrim Governor William Bradford proclaimed a day of thanksgiving to be shared by all the colonists and the neighboring Native Americans. This is the origin of Thanksgiving. It is ironical that the immigrants Pilgrims, receving aid, finally betrayed the Native Americans in spite of their kindness. Anyway, tomorrow Im gonna enjoy Thanksgiving with my home owners family and having great food, inlcuding seasoned turkey.
