Weddings and funerals have a tendency of bringing out the best and worst in people and here in Kenya, we have enough of both. Why are we lengthening the list by adding a REFERENDUM? With interrogations into the heckling of the President in Migori having commenced, I’d like us to ask ourselves a hard question. Are we are in the Third World because we are underdeveloped or are we underdeveloped therefore in the Third World? Let’s compare our behavior to that of those in the UK where there is a referendum on a very serious matter: the breaking off of a nation, Scotland, from the UK. Here we have seen the Brits – led by their PM – lobby freely across Scotland, while showing and receiving respect and issue-based debate. We have not seen any kind of violence, name-calling, individual tensions or the heckling of the PM and his delegates. While the Scots have been debating, us Kenyans have been perfecting our name and shoe throwing skills. What is wrong with us? Friends, when we get to a point where we lose all respect for our elders and more relevantly, the presidency, some deep soul searching is warranted. DISCIPLINE and DEVELOPMENT go hand-in-hand. That we know. So is it that we just don’t care enough or, God forbid, there is simply something so primal in us that we are nothing more than an emotive lot…one incapable of civil discourse and the discipline required to advance from “underdeveloped” to “developed”?
