Wedgemont Lake Trail key: D~2~ST~R~RT (With a very steep scramble at the end to the lake on loose rocks thats exposed) 2014~Go about 12 Kms past Whistler Village and follow the signs. Drive up a gravel road. Do not park at the old parking lot as the trail has been re-routed to a new parking lot. Theres about room for 12 spots and theres a pit toilet here. It didnt have any t-paper so you might want so e in your pocket. Some people park at the old lot which is now blocked off and its just a pull out here with a few spots. You also have to walk a long ways to the new trailhead. Its 14 Kms return with a 1200 meter elevation gain. Expect at least 4 hours up if your in good shape. Its about 3 1/2 down. Start your hike as you cross Wedge Creek over a nice bridge. The trail is flat here... Enjoy it as it wont be long before you wish you were on flat ground again. In the beginning the trail snakes its way up over rolling hills as you cross five safe log bridges. Soon you will come to a rock slide. The trail goes along the rock slide for about 30 feet. Watch your footing as some of the rocks arent stable. The trail now starts switch backing and gets quite steep at times. Its in the forest and theres plenty of roots and rocks to brace your feet on and grab a hold if if you need to. Then theres a big tree with a step cut into it. Its very steep here but theres a piece to hold onto and the step is nice. The trail gets steeper but youre still surrounded in old growth forest. Its calming and beautiful. Then its a gradual uphill and after not to long you come to a flat area. Dont get too comfortable as it doesnt last long. It will soon start to climb again and you will come to another rock slide. Its more open here but not too bad as you carefully step through the trail. It snakes around and back into the trees. Once again it gets steep as you just keep trudging along. On your right side youll see the waterfall cascading down 300 meters. Sadly this was my turn around point. I was about 4 Kms in with 3 Kms left to go I convinced myself I would not be able to make it up the steep rock slide that was to come. What did I learn about myself today? I want people to go ahead as I dont want to spoil their fun. Especially when Im slow at the elevation. However, on a steep trail like this I didnt feel comfortable to continue on my own. I also learnt today that the steeper the trail is the Kms feel a lot longer. When I started to feel like I was nearly at the top I was only on fact half way! Although this trail is well marked, the one thing missing from this trail is the Kms marks so you know how long you still have to go. The good news for me was my hiking party said it was real sketchy, steep and slippery as you scrambled to the top. Coming down was also all of that and it was just as long coming down as you needed to watch your footing. Scaredy Cat says you could loose one of your nine lives on this very steep trail. Happy & safe trails...
