Wednesday, 10.29.14: Durnstein & Wachau Valley in Vienna, Austria - a little town enclosed in a triangle of walls and towers with walls winding up to the ruined castle - 490 feet above the town. We started with brunch onboard and at 2PM we met our local guides for a walking tour of the medieval village of Durnstein in the heart of Austrian wine country. Again, narrow cobblestone streets, some beautiful buildings, ruins and interesting shops. Photos capture a mix of views from our riverboat veranda on the Danube and as I gazed out I saw 3 swans a swimming and if I stayed longer there might have been maids a milking and a partridge in a pear tree. The walking excursion took us to the Durnstein Abby and a Cloister and we learned that only 900 people live in this town and the schoolhouse has only 17 children with 2 teachers and an aide. Imagine that! As the tour of the town finished we were offered the option to take a rigorous hike up the mountainside to see the ruins of the castle. For those of you Ho know me - it was a tough decision and decided to have a coffee in the town square when TRAGEDY STRUCK. Someone on the hike- not from our immediate group but part of the larger group dislocated her hip when she fell on the hike. She was airlifted out and taken to the local hospital. Tonight at dinner - as we near Vienna, we toasted Auf Wiedersehen to Ethel.
