Wednesday 16th December, 1914 Fine bright day. Scored. Had 15 rounds rapid, only scored 19 at it (1 bull, 1 centre and 6 magpies) fired 30 rounds altogether. Distant gun-fire was heard about 8 or 9 by some. We (and the instructors!) were warned to pack and leave by 2:55 train. All sorts of rumours. Beat Sandy at billiards and heard that 7 German warships had bombarded the wireless stations at Hartlepool and Scarborough. 1 had been sunk, the others chased north. At tea Forbes (of RHS) who had been to Strensall, saw 5 trains of artillery pass to Scarborough. Wrote to George at night. (Wrote Schole Regia, and Jack on Monday night.)
