Wednesday 24th December 2014, USA, Illinois and Kentucky! Ozee landing lane/missing bridge - Morganfield (Hometown Inn) Kentucky Distance: 45.65km connect.garmin/modern/activity/656745852 Waking up in the tent in heavy rain... Thats a real test of willpower! Is funny how the brain has the capacity to selectively forget/dampen the memory of horrible experiences. Id almost forgotten just how miserable running through non stop rain day after day had been, something I experienced for weeks on end as I ran through Finland last year. Running in the rain then camping in rain is miserable as sin, but waking up, and discovering its still raining... Thats when you just lie there feeling sorry for yourself. No matter how much will power you have.. Voluntary dragging yourself out the warm cozy sleeping bag and stepping out into the rain. Needless to say a late start this morning! Then immediately lost a mile running back to the highway Id left last night, before discovering the missing bridge (saline river). Lost another half a kilometre on a dead-end road (the highways here are lethal, every chance I get to take minor roads I go for it, trouble is it sends most these minor roads are poorly maintained and apparently dont warrant road closed signs! I keep losing time running slow on muddy gravel sure roads and half the time the road lets me down! I had to cross the Ohio river today using a bridge. Half mile long on a highway, no sidewalk, the police had agreed to give me an escort across but there was no longer coverage to contact them. I was just pumping air into my refillable air horn (130 decibel fog horn-designed for cyclists but works equally well on a jogging stroller!) To give me a fighting chance of making the run across alive when someone whos driven past me earlier pulled over to ask why and where I was running. Tom Rush offered to take me over the bridge, an offer I could never accept, instead I explained my situation and suggested we swap surnames for half a mile I need to make a mad Rush over the bridge, but even then I could do with a pilot Carr to prevent people running Mr over! In the Christmas spirit he obliged (and probably broke the law in doing so) to help by driving behind me with his hazards on. There was very little traffic on the roads today being that most people are on holiday, that didnt stop two out of the three cars that came up behind Tom acting as complete idiots and risking people lives by accelerating past us into oncoming traffic over a blind hill (Ive never seen a bridge design like the Shawnee Ohio bridge anywhere else in the world, its like a cross between a humpback bridge and a suspension bridge, resulting in a blind hill motorist must crest each end of the bridge). The run to Morganfield was on an horrendous road, the only reason I managed it was the fact most people are on holiday today so theres very little traffic on the road. 8ft drops either side of the road, and small heavily cambered shoulder to step to push the stroller on. At least from Morganfield I region the Trans American cycle network/s of cycle friendly roads on my way South. Ive checked in two nites here at the Hometown Inn, forget the No room at the Inn traditionally mentioned in nativity plays all around the world this time of year.. Out of 24 rooms only 1 had been taken by a lone runner!
