Wednesday, 9 July 2014: Words of the day are... 膝 帶 馬, 腰 連 身 Sounds like, Sut Die Mah, Yu Lean Sun. Means, Knee Leads Horse, Waist Links (Connects) Body. Many martial arts have the appearance of chambering the leg before lifting the leg but that is nothing more than a stage of placing balance over one leg first before stepping forward, or backward, or to kick. This trait was adapted from observing horses and their knee-lifting by the earliest Chinese kung fu founders. The first saying stresses how important the 膝 knees are in 帶 leading ones structure called a 馬 horse. Horses (like Dragons, i.e. 龍 馬 精 神) have been revered for milleniums in China as an animal of strength, stability, vitality and free spirit. These attributes obviously are of great significance to martial artists too. What practitioner doesnt want strength, stability and vitality, giving them the spirit of freedom? Every gallop starts with the knees muscle-joint when going forward. Waist Links Body means that the hip-waist-back act as the central controller of the bodys leverage, power and axis. It is the core of the human body. Proficient use of the waist coordinated with any body part(s) eliminates waste of movement, effort and energy. This wisdom is the precursor to Ving Tsuns Economy of Movement Theory. Logically, it includes the economy of energy & effort too. So proper waisting eliminates wasting in applied energy-in-motion and in combat exchanges. -梅 玉 Moy Yuk
