Wednesday, April 16 Devotional Psalm 55, 74; Lamentations 2:1-9; 2Corinthians 1:23-2:11; Mark 14:12-25 ..Because of the voice of the enemy, because of the oppression of the wicked: for they cast iniquity upon me, and in wrath they hate me… Psalm 55:3 I understand King David’s expression of deep disillusionment and profound sadness over having been betrayed spoken in these verses. How many of us have been persecuted unjustly? In the past, I would be the first to ask – What did you do? – No one just targets an unsuspecting person for bad treatment for no good reason. Yet, for me telling the truth in an investigation over 15 years ago led to twists and turns and years of personally being vilified and consequently losing out on valuable promotions and opportunities for professional growth. The damage and toll to my family and health are still healing. King David’s persecution and my own have never come close to or could be remotely compared to the false accusations our Lord Jesus Christ is about to willingly endure at the close of this Holy Week. He, who is pure and blameless, is willing to suffer torture and death to ensure that we will never have to go through death on a cross for our salvation, and for this I am eternally grateful. Just as Jesus and his ancestor King David found peace and deliverance from continual prayer and even thanksgiving during those darkest hours, I am reminded to do the same when my soul is bone tired and wants to give up with fear. When I remember to give my burdens to the Lord, He will and has always sustained me, just as He sustained his only Son during the long, lonely hours ahead. Pat Johnson
