Wednesday, August 27 at 7:00 pm, Gary Michalek, Master Composter, will present a program “Master the Art and Science of Composting” at Trinity Lutheran Church, Frankfort. Plant It Wild is hosting the event which is free and open to the public. Reduce, Re-Use and Recycle are the three main tenants of sound ecological conservation. Composting your kitchen scraps and yard waste REDUCES the amount of waste that goes into commercial landfills and RECYCLES that waste into useful organic matter to RE-USE as beneficial amendments to your gardens. On average, 17% to 24% of Michigan’s solid waste stream consists of grass clippings, leaves, garden debris and other organic yard waste. Composting that ‘waste’ into beneficial organic material saves trash hauling fees and landfill space while benefitting the soil. To “Master the Art and Science of Composting”, Michalek will cover the following topics: the composting process, composting materials, methods and structures, hot and cold composting, troubleshooting, and using compost in the garden. According to Michalek, “Whether you live on a small city lot or acreage in the rural countryside, there are easy backyard composting methods that can help you lessen the amount of waste that finds its way to the “Mount Trash-mores” of local landfills.” Gary Michalek, is a Frankfort area resident and Plant It Wild member. He is an Advanced Master Gardener through the Benzie County Michigan State University Extension and a Master Composter through Wayne County. He has made composting presentations to local garden groups, 4-H youth groups, schools, MSU Extension groups, and Transition Cadillac. His program will include how-to handouts, compost bin examples and tools. We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday, August 27, 7:00 pm at Trinity Lutheran Church, 955 James Street in Frankfort. Admission to the program is free and open to the public. There will be a social time after the meeting. Plant It Wild is a Michigan native plant organization whose mission is to foster greater awareness and appreciation of the fragile natural environment of our region.
