Wednesday I am headed to the border. This is one of things I decided to do on sabbatical. As a Texan, a Christian, a board member of Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS), and a fan of Lutheran Social Services (LSS), last Spring I asked Evan Moilan and Kurt Senske at LSS if I could visit one of their homes that cares for unaccompanied minors, to better understand the situation and their work. This visit will take place with the approval of the Office of Refugee Services (ORR), which is operated by the United States Department of Health and Human Services. The ORR offers support for refugees seeking safe haven within the United States, including victims of human trafficking, those seeking asylum from persecution, survivors of torture and war, and unaccompanied children. The recent media coverage has made this an even more visible issue. LSS has invited several folks from ELCA Churchwide Offices, including Mike Stadie of Lutheran Disaster Response (as well as Stephen Bouman, Rafael Malpica-Padilla, Michael Stadie, Daniel Rift, Hector Carrasquillo, Megan Brandsrud, Raquel Rodriguez, Tia Upchurch-Freelove, Melissa Ramirez-Cooper. Im excited there is genuine interest in this. We will receive a briefing, visit an existing shelter and a shelter in renovation. Well also meet with local pastors. Some children are also placed in foster care. LSS is the number one provider of foster care in Texas. The duration of a childs stay is 25-30 days. During their stay children receive medical care, clothing, counseling, case management, and education. LSS approaches this humanitarian crisis from the mind frame of the childs safety and well-being. The church must address this as a moral issue: taking care of children. People ask how they can help. Right now, support refugees through prayer, words and financial gifts. Read Pastor Paul Bailies blog. Learn. Read from a wide variety of sources. Avoid extremes. Let your God-given compassion emerge.
