Wednesday, January 29 Student Ministries Devotion Question: What is the writer saying? Answer: How can I apply this to my life? 1 John 2:7-11 7 Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning.8 Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth. 9 He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now. 10 He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him. 11 But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes. Digging Deeper - So what’s up with the “old” and “new” command? The command to love each other isn’t new. These Christians knew that. What was new about love was doing it through Christ. We now know what perfect love is because Christ’s death showed everyone (vs. 2). Verses 9-11 give one of the commands John was talking about in verse 3: You can’t walk with Christ and not love others. Verse 11 gives insight into a Christian who doesn’t love: He is blind. If you have something against another Christian, you may think your friendship with God is OK, but it’s not! You have to be in tune with God an those around you. Do you have conflict with other Christians? Are you being honest with yourself? How are you going to show love to them?
