Wednesday, November 6 - Watch and Be Ready Don’t let him find you sleeping when he arrives without warning. (Mark 13:36) So, since I have this gut feeling that the end times are rapidly approaching, if not imminent, does this then mean that I cannot sleep at night, but be constantly watching? Hardly. But Jesus does mean that I had best not grow lethargic and complacent about his soon coming. I best keep faithfully serving him in obedience. So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up (Galatians 6:9). It is so easy to give up the fight and retreat, to just fall back into my recliner and tune out the world. That is healthy occasionally, but not in respect to carrying on the work for which He has called me. I think of the scene in Top Gun where Maverick disengages from the dogfight with the Soviet MIG. He is repeatedly ordered to re-engage. Lives were in serious jeopardy. Finally, at the last second Maverick yanks on the joystick and re-engages the enemy forces, discovering he was equipped after all to fight victoriously. I dont need to wait until the last second to re-engage. In fact, the war is so vicious I best not disengage at all. Millions upon millions of lives are at stack. Jesus tells here of a man who had servants that he left in charge of accomplishing certain tasks while he went on a long trip, not telling them when he would return. It didnt really matter when he returned. Their assigned task was to do what he had told them and watch for his return. Matthew Henry says well that he has very wisely kept us at uncertainty, that we might always be ready. It was much the same kind of warning when he told of the bridesmaids who were to keep plenty of oil in their lamps and their wicks trimmed. Failing to heed these warning can be very costly spiritually. I enjoy a good restful nights sleep. It is Gods designed method of replenishing the body and getting it ready for another day of service. But I cannot stay in bed, for like all things, too much of it is not good. Ive got to be diligent, alert to the battles all around me, ever watching the eastern sky for the Kings return, longing to hear, Well done, good and faithful servant. In the meantime he says, I say to you what I say to everyone: Watch for him!” (v. 37).
