Wednesday October 22nd, 2014 Story by: Seth Shore, A much needed Insight into Street/Urban Art. In my opinion the most ironic thing about all of this, is that Graffiti is illegal and if someone is caught while painting a wall or gets caught in any other way connecting them to the scene they are arrested and fined. Then someone comes to the sight of the artwork and paints over it (the majority of it is crap & should be painted over anyways...however thats not the point) But now and for quite sometime, the same people that would complain about Graffiti or Street-art & labeling it trespassing, loitering or vandalism are now buying works from Artists like Shepard Fairey, Banksy & many others which is great for them and the culture, especially considering the risks that they have taken to get there work out there. But then these people go one step further by contradicting themselves by saying or doing things like: Leaving Artwork by Banksy up and painting over everything else just based on people thinking that it makes them hip if they buy one of his original works of Art at a Sothebys auction for $750,000.00. So if a painting sold for that much at an auction, surely a one-off piece on a wall in Oxfordshire must be priceless! But the Artists & myself included think its hilarious that people are willing to spend this type of money for artwork that they have no idea about. The majority of people who purchase these works will invite some of their high-society friends over to eat cheese, wine & caviar to look at their amazing Artwork collection including paintings from Rembrandt, Picasso, Da Vinci & Delacroix then all of the sudden there is a Banksy or Obey Giant in piece in a frame and the people will stare at it and actually try to make sense of whats there and 90% of the time have absolutely no clue what the hell they are looking at or talking about. I really think Graffiti should be legal as long as its done right, and by right I dont mean good I mean done on a building that is in foreclosure, about to be demolished, has been abandoned for at least 6 months or it is done with temporary mediums including but not limited to stickers, chalk or anything that can be removed without causing permanent damage. Below is a link to a 47 minute video demonstrating some of the things that I speak of plus it exposes you to one of the biggest Street Artists in the history of Graffiti that most people have vilified, wrote-off & in most cases have never even heard of or knew existed Robbo and the legendary war with Banksy that has instantly given him legitimacy and credit into the world of real art that now gives his lifes work tangible pricing.
